Far Cry 2 Impressions: Part 3

So yesterday I was working on finishing the map editor section of the Far Cry 2 guide. But I had a very tough time staying focused. Why? Instead of writing, I found myself completely sucked into the map editor. At first I was just going to create a simple map to illustrate how all the tools worked. But then I got side tracked by carving out ponds and streams. My stream cut across a road I had placed earlier…so I just had to build a bridge. It kept going like that for a couple of hours. I just kept adding objects and tweaking the environment until I had a pretty awesome looking map set in a jungle clearing.

Although I’ve been playing shooters for more than a decade, I’ve only dabbled with map editors in the past. Largely because they were very difficult to use, meaning it would literally take days or weeks to create anything worthwhile. But with Far Cry 2’s powerful tools, creating an awesome map is shockingly simple. Considering what I accomplished in a couple of hours, I’m very excited to see what the community can come up with in the days and weeks following the game’s release. One really exciting feature is the ability to download and edit maps created by other users. So if you upload a map and get a three-star rating, someone else could download, edit it, and upload the updated version and possibly get a five-star rating. But the editor doesn’t get full credit; the original creator’s signature remains on the map for its lifetime. This could result in the formation of a very robust map-making community, with multiple users applying input to fine tune a single map. However, one thing I am concerned about is that the map editor is so much fun to use that there might be fewer and fewer gamers playing the actual maps. But one thing is certain. There will never be a shortage of Far Cry 2 maps to choose from.

    Dear Mabooza,
thank you very much for your update!
I’m glad you’ll include a section on the map editor in the “Far Cry 2” guide! It looks really awesome from what I’ve seen so far.
Talking of sections: Will you include the achievements for the game (See http://www.achieve360points.com/game/farcry2/, please!) as well, please?
By the way, will these achievements apply to the PC version of the game as well (The way it was done for “The Orange Box”, e.g.!)?
Is there any news on the bonus missions, yet?
Some dutch guy who pre-ordered “Far Cry 2” got a pre-order disc according to which he’ll get only four bonus missions (The same number is mentioned at Amazon.de, by the way.) – instead of the six Gamespot promised. They’re called:
    1) The Georgian
    2) The Bolivian
    3) Special Delivery
    4) Le Francais

Thank you very much for your continued support!
    Keep up your great work!
    Best wishes,

Yes, we’re covering all the Xbox 360 achievements and PS3 trophies in the guide. As far as I know, there are no PC-based achievements. No definitive news on the bonus missions yet.

    Dear Mabooza,
thank you very much for your replies.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the PC-based achievements and the bonus missions!
Please do keep us posted, please!

    Dear Mabooza,
I’ve got another suggestion for this guide which I’d like you to consider, please, if you haven’t already done so:
What do you think about adding a list of all these different creepy first aid animations to the “Far Cry 2 Prima Official Game Guide”? I heard there were about 60 of them in the game.
By the way, the bonus missions “tell the story of what happened before the events in the main Far Cry 2 game” according to http://hmv.com/hmvweb/navigate.do?pPageID=3543 (This site also provides short descriptions of these four bonus missions in case you’re interested.)!
    See ya’,

    Hey Mick,

Thanks for your input. I can now confirm that the bonus missions content will not be in the guide. We simply ran out of space and time. Over the last week the guide jumped from 208 pages to 240, so we had to make some tough decisions. However, we still plan to cover the missions on Primagames.com

You’re right. There’s lots of gory healing animations in the game. I thought of covering them, but static screen shots of these “operations” just don’t do them justice. You just have to see them in action to get the full impact.

    Dear Mabooza,
thank you very much for replying to me again!
I’m very happy that the “Far Cry 2” Guide will now be more extensive. I cannot wait to delve into this wealth of information!
I’m glad you plan on covering the bonus missions at PrimaGames.com and strongly hope this’ll pan out!
Thank you for at least considering to cover the healing animations. But in the end you’re right about doing them justice.
Thanks a lot for your continued support!
    I do appreciate it!
    Take care,
